Dieser Artikel bildet die Grundlage meiner Auseinandersetzung mit dem Konzept der Interkulturellen Kompetenz. Anhand der Analyse des wissenschaftlichen Diskurses im deutschsprachigen Raum zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts arbeite ich zentrale Streitpunkte der Debatte heraus. Auf dieser Basis entwickle ich einen Vorschlag für ein verändertes Verständnis, das interkulturelle Kompetenz als transformative Fähigkeit zur Kulturproduktion, zur Wandlung von Interkulturalität in Normalität versteht.
“One of the intriguing ideas [of Rathje’s concept of intercultural competence] is that culturality does not emerge from homogeneity of people but is associated with recognized differences between people and groups who know and interact with each other in the same sociocultural setting […]. Interculturality would be characterized by unfamiliarity or strangeness with existing differences. Intercultural competence then is the ability to familiarize difference, to endow “normality” in the process of intercultural interaction. At the end of this process is cultural cohesion, achieved through embedding cultural differences into one’s own discourse of normality.”
